Joseph Frank Payne (1840–1910) matriculated from University College London in 1858, but quickly moved to Magdalen on being offered a Demyship there. After obtaining a First in Natural Sciences in 1862, he was elected a Fellow there the following year, a post he held until he resigned it in 1883 after marrying. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of Magdalen in 1906.
A medical scholar, Payne became variously a Fellow of the University of London, Consulting Physician to St Thomas’s Hospital, Harveian Librarian, a member of the Royal College of Physicians, and served variously as President of the Pathological, Epidemiological, and Dermatological Societies. He also presented Magdalen with an incomplete copy of the Compendium totius Grammatice, by John Anwykyll, the first Master of Magdalen College School.
This diary was given to the archives in October 1994 as Accession No. 94/238 by a granddaughter of Payne’s.
Recatalogued in June 2011.
