Reverend Arthur Adams (1912-1997) attended Sheffield University, receiving a First Class BA in English in 1935 and an MA in 1936. Adams attended Ripon Hall, Oxford and went on to fill religious offices at Christ Church and in various parishes and infirmaries around the country. In 1938 Adams became Chaplain and Tutor at Ripon Hall and in 1948 he became Lecturer in Theology at Queen’s College, Birmingham. In 1949 Adams became a Fellow of Magdalen College and was elected Dean of Divinity. He retained this office until 1975 and was a Fellow of the College until 1979. Adams produced several theological publications. He died in 1997.
This collection contains various papers and ephemera in Adams’ possession at the time of his death. Much of the collection relates to past and contemporary members of the College and College staff. The collection also contains assorted photographs and ephemera relating to the College, with some items relating specifically to the College Chapel and choir.
This collection comes from various donations. The provenance of MC:F57/MS3/1 is unknown. MC:F57/X1/1 was added to the archives as Acc. No. 97/254 in October 1997. The following were added to the archives as Acc. No. 98/134 in July 1998: MC:F57/MS1/2, MC:F57/MS2/1-2, MC:F57/MS3/2-4, MC:F57/MS4/5, MC:F57/MS5/1-4, MC:F57/P3/1-2, MC:F57/P5/1-6. The following were added to the archives as Acc. No. 00/127 in June 2000: MC:F57/MS1/1, MC:F57/MS4/1-4 & 6, MC:F57/MS6/1, MC:F57/MS7/1-2, MC:F57/P1/1-5, MC:F57/P2/1-3, MC:F57/P3/3, MC:F57/P4/1-2, MC:F57/C1/1, MC:F57/N1/1-10. All these three accessions were given to the archives by Adams’ widow.
